Folding Sunglasses has been around for a long time but they’ve always had a few problems, for example being very sensitive with many hinges that can break and sometimes not being that much smaller than a normal pair of non folding glasses.
A couple of years ago I got my eyes on a Kickstarter campaign that was about a pair of sunglasses that would fold up incredibly small. I had been using folding sunglasses for a long time – and usually wore pairs that I picked up at various vintage stores and flea markets. But the ROAV Sunglasses had something that no other pair I’d seen was able to live up to. They had what was marketed as an unbreakable hinge mechanism where the hinges are carved in the material and therefor have no screws, and they fold thin, incredibly thin.
I’ve been going through a few Kickstarter campaigns that didn’t turn out that well and therefor I didn’t rush to purchase these glasses but made a mental note to check out if they actually became a purchasable product in the forseeable future. They were indeed brought to market and I was getting close to buying a pair but thought they were a tad bit too expensive – since I’m used to buying sunglasses in flea markets at a 1-3 dollar average budget.
After a solid wait for a sale it finally came Black Friday 2018 and all ROAV glasses were 50% off. I decided to finally grab a pair – at around $80 which was a really solid price! However I had to pay sales tax + admin fee to the Swedish state which put the total price at around $125 which actually wasn’t that far from the non discounted price. Oh well – at least I had my sunglasses and could finally start bringing a pair of glasses wherever I went.
I have definitely worn them A LOT during these 18 months that I’ve owned them and I can say they have blown me away with how competent they are as sunglasses even though they fold away in the most minimal case you’ve ever seen for a pair of glasses.
They are made in a matte black material that has been very resistant to scratches and wear. They still look more or less new to me – except when they pick up a bunch of fingerprints which they definitely do. You have to be careful about how much to you put your fingers onto the glasses here since fingerprints are both visible and make you see worse through them.
The Positives:
+ The Size – Amazing to always be able to bring in a tiny pocket.
+ The sturdyness – They feel actually unbreakable.
+ The adaptiveness – They fit my quite large head perfectly
+ Polarized Glass – Reduced reflections
+ Similar looks to Rayban Wayfarer
The Negatives:
– They look a bit like 3d glasses you wear in a cinema.
– They pick up finger prints quite easily – which you can also see in the review video I made.
But all in all I don’t think I can find a better all round pair of sunglasses that I’d be able to bring on all my trips and always have handy. I’ve basicly never owned a pair of sunglasses for more than a year before but the ROAV Lennox I’m sure are gonna be with me many many years.
If you want to buy a pair of ROAV glasses and don’t want to wait for a black friday sale like I did you can buy them here and use the coupon code W2Best for a $30 discount! Should make the decision even easier than at the original price level.
