Kobo Clara HD Review After 6 Months

Tech

I used to own the Kobo Aura One (see unboxing here) which was a bigger 7,8 inch eReader with waterproof capabilities making it perfect for a cozy night at home by yourself reading books int the bath. I never really used eReaders before so novelties like reading in a bath or being able to bring 100 books on a trip was amazing. However I wasn’t that pleased about the size after using it for some time. It’s simply too big to be able to put in a pocket hold in one hand and comfortably carry it around.

Therefor I decided to sell it and instead bought the Kobo Clara HD which I have used for the last 6 months. And bottomline about the eReader is that it is really good! See my video review here or scroll to read more!

The Size – The main attraction of this eReader is in my opinion it’s size. Before I bought it I saw it at a friends place and was truly impressed by the small size. When adjusting the size of the fonts in an ePub book I was able to perfectly read the pages in a similar way to if I would have read a paperback book that I bought in a kiosk before going to my train.
The 6 inch eReader measures 11 cm * 16 cm * 0,835cm, and weighs 166g. It’s basicly a large mobile phone in size and weighs less than one paperback book.

Features:
This is not exactly a feature packed product – but it has what is actually necessary.
The main features that I am interested in:
– High resolution screen with 1072 * 1448 pixels and 300 ppi.
– Wifi
– Backlight
– 8GB Storage
– 512 Mb RAM
A very simple web browser
– Sync with Pocket to put articles on the eReader

It is a very plain eReader with just one button un the bottom and one Micro USB connection. There is a logo on the front side and a logo on the back side.

The menu / operating system is quite simple and let’s you navigate in your library. When you are reading it let’s you bookmark pages or highlight parts of the text that you want to bookmark or add a comment to. This feature is really good.

You are able to read both ePub, bought or borrowed at library or PDFs. I haven’t yet been able to download files straight from the browser to the eReader but I will look into this and make a video about it if possible.

The backlight feature is VERY good. It means you don’t need to have a light on to be able to read and therefor can read in bed before you are going to sleep with the lowest light setting on.

The Bad:
The screen is too small for efficiently reading PDF documents with small text and in my opinion it’s too hard to work the pinch to zoom for it to be a solid reading experience. The amount of PDF books I read on this eReader will be easy to count. I will almost 100% stick to ePub where I can adjust the font size and therefor have it look exactly the way I need.

My Verdict:
This is for it’s price the best eReader I’ve used and I highly recommend it for anyone – except if you really need to handle PDF documents with a lot of text in them. If you wanna get one and support my Youtube / Blog you can use the links below.
